The concept for the first European Photocamp came about following BarCamp Leeds 2007. The idea that the concept could be taken from a technology/internet focus to photography seemed to make great sense. Some of the recommendations of BarCamp have been adapted to get the unconference concept to work for the audience, but the core stays the same.
This works in two ways – the event should be open to anyone with a serious desire to take or otherwise create better photographic images – welcoming and friendly. The delegates should also be open to sharing skills, experiences and ideas. Core to the principles is the idea that the delegates deliver the sessions – to each other.
It is key that the events focus on practical ways to improve the attendees’ photography. It is always a preference to offer workshop-type sessions over presentations. However, practical isn’t just about doing – it is also aimed at sessions being relevant and valuable to the audience. Or simply… avoid complete geekery!
Ideally these events are as close to free as possible. It is key that the event is well within the reach of all who would want to attend.
